Eating what they aren't supposed to…

And bringing it back up.
Thought I would start a thread on this… since Cody is the King of socks. We have done this a few times successfully. After your dog has ingested something that they should not have, you can use hydrogen peroxide to make them vomit. Hold their mouth shut, nose in the air and pull out one side of his jawls. (It helps to have a second person to help) Pour 1tsp – 1tbs of hp in there. Holding their mouth shut makes it go in the throat not the lungs. Keep them active for the next 30 minutes and it should come up.
You must do this within 20 minutes or so of him swallowing the object. I’m sure that there are some things that are not recommended to bring back up but it works for socks.

MyaModeratorThank you so much for posting this Melissa. This was one of the few tricks I heard about and always thought I would look it up on WA when I would need it.

SgreccoParticipantKeep in mind its 1tsp per 10lbs of body weight but not to exceed 3tbsp 🙂 Great topic….

Tina in HollandParticipantYeah…I’ve had to do that. Learned it on WA. Amos also getts a soort of cough syrup sometimes and he opens his mouth like a kid and lets me spoon it in his mouth. A very good “trick” to teach in case you ever need to give them something.
greydogsParticipantthings not to use peroxide for:
things too big to bring back up – like raw corn cobs.
i am sure there are more.
oh yes, i remember someone’s dog (anne? from the older wa version) ate brillo pads. those are too big too. she gave him canned asparagus, so the sharp ends would be wrapped.
BasGModeratorI was googling this when Odin was having a spell of dry heaving and I couldn’t find it. I plan on making some front-page posts about stuff like this. Thanks so much!

Also don’t induce vomiting if they ingested any chemical such as bleech, anti-freeze, cleaning products…etc as they can cause more harm than good coming back up.

MyaModeratorI would expect same as kids for those chemicals. To drink water. Am I correct?

Yes that was my dog! 🙂
Here is an article about some other options for those times when you don’t want induce vomiting and want it to pass the other way:
http://www.justweimaraners.com/help-my-weim-just-ate-a-fill-in-the-blank/BridgetParticipantLevi ate a whole bottle of sleeping pills once (although at the time we didn’t know what the meds were as he chewed off the label)…and when we went to the vet to have them induce vomiting, he also threw up a cat toy. Go figure.
I’m not sure I’d ever want to handle that on my own though. I think I would just take him to the vet to be sure. But then again, if he ate socks constantly…I’m sure that adds up! Still, an interesting read. I’d never heard of that before!
