Flea, tick, heartworm meds
-
EricParticipant
First off I want to thank BasG for reviving the survivors from weim addict. I wasn’t a big poster but a daily reader.
Now that it is starting to get warmer here in Georgia, the ticks are already coming out and I am on the hunt for a good flea, tick, and heartworm meds.
I’ve read so many horror stories on all the toxic junk in the mainstream meds and was hoping my fellow weim owners could give me some suggestions.
Ifound a natural product but have no idea of the effectiveness. http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Only-Natural-Pet-HW-Protect-Herbal-Formula/999068.aspx
Hope you guys and gals can help! Thanks Eric
BasGModeratorI’ve always had concerns myself. Especially with how sensitive our guys can be. Our vet doesn’t mind some holistic solutions so I might be able to get a few good answers out of her.

EricParticipantEricParticipantBasGModeratorI had along chat with a vet-techs whom shall remain nameless. My favourite clinic happens to have a ton of experience with Weims, to I generally trust their opinion.
…especially when they tell me they would rather I have not use anything, instead of selling us some expensive product we don’t need, and just comb them out a few times instead. They aren’t big fans of adding chemicals you don’t need and often cause more issues than they solve. They’ve had several Weims with severe reactions before. And in their expert opinion, keeping your pets clean and healthy is all the preventative measures you need. This is particularly simple with a dog that has a short coat like a Weim.
So in short; bath, thorough combing and check-up on the skin. Healthy diet.

artsvarcParticipantWe use Vectra 3D. We have never had a problem with it but I’d be up for something natural. Hopefully someone else can input.

victoriaParticipantUno doesn’t seem to get fleas very often, if he does I dust him with diatomaceous earth and that seems to take care of it. He also get a flea bath maybe once a month during the summer. When we go hiking, I’ll rub him down with this spray called Natures Defense, which is actually made for horses. Just spray some on the paper towel and wipe him down, it keeps tick and gnats away.. Heartworm meds are tricky, since I live in a south, we have a lot of mosquitos here, and since I haven’t found an effective natural alternative yet, I just use generic ivermectin tablets, he only gets them 6 months out of a year since I watch the temperature and stop when it gets too cold for mosquitos to reproduce.
