Insect/Fly Bites?
-
WinnieParticipant
Winnie & I went for a 30 min trail run & 15 minute walk today at a state park we hadn’t visited before. When I was wiping the dirt off of her at the car afterwards, I saw some red spots on her stomach. She has about 15-20 circular spots on her stomach & armpit areas (all spots where she doesn’t have much hair). The spots are perfectly circular with a small dot in the center & a little red circle around it. She doesn’t seem to notice them at all & hasn’t paid them any attention…no itching/licking/etc.
From what I’ve been able to find online, it looks like they might be fly bites. I guess that could make sense given their sudden appearance after the outing and the fact there was a section of maybe 1/4 mile that left the woods & became a singletrack surrounded by knee-high grasses. Has anyone dealt with this before? I’ve rubbed some triple antibiotic on them & will continue to monitor.
As I would like to avoid this kind of thing in the future, do any of you put anything on your dogs before taking them out in order to prevent bug bites?
Thanks everyone!

KatieParticipantYup, I agree on the bug bites. We did get a natural repellant spray to help try to prevent this. I do think it helps a little, but has to be reapplied a lot.
OchaParticipantOur dog had exactly the same bites some summers past. Doctor said they were fly bites. They went away on their own and Ocha did not seem to care about them. We did not have to deal with them too frequently (even though we spend a lot of time on the woods) so we never put any repellent..
WinnieParticipantThanks for the replies.
There are only two little spots left that you can even really see anymore, so it was no big deal. We’re out trail running and/or hiking nearly everyday & haven’t had a problem except for that outing, so hopefully it was an isolated incident & not a sign of things to come now that the insects have come out of their hibernation here in Michigan.
BasGModeratorI found a couple of the exact same red welts on Athena 2 days ago. They’re almost entirely gone now. Just a little pink dot remains.
