Lipomas

Hey Everyone
I haven’t been to weim addict in forever, but used to post here regularly. Anyways, my weim is almost 9 years old and couple months ago I discovered 2 lipomas, one on the side and one in his waist area. It’s almost as though they’ve grown overnight. They only thing that changed was that I took him to a vet for a senior blood panel, they had to sedate him since he freaked out. He was also put on prozac for behavioral issues. I don’t know if it was a coincidence or not, but the lumps have grown shortly after I put him on the meds. When I took him back in, the vet confirmed lipomas, but said they are unrelated to the drugs.
He wasn’t doing well on them, so I took him off probably 2 weeks after. Since then, they haven’t grown or gotten smaller, but I’m keeping an eye on them. I know they are very common in weims who are older.
Just curious to see if anyone has had similar experience or alternative treatment options. From what I’ve read, its best to just leave them alone unless they get bigger and interfere with movement or cause discomfort. Also if the size changes, to do a fine needle aspiration to check the cells.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that. If you have cause to doubt the vet, I would definitely take him for a second opinion at another vet.

Tina in HollandParticipantIs that Uno? He looks so familiar.
Seamus had and Amos has a lot of fatty lumps and bumps. I Always have the vet check them out when I’m there, but as long as they are loose my vet says not to worry and that weims are really prone to them. Hard to pinpoint what brings it on.
NancyParticipantPoor Zoie has had fatty tumors since we got her at the age of 4. We had some removed but the new vet only removes if the impede movement, which I agree with. It just seems to be a part of weims, that and they lean build and short coat makes them noticeable.
I doubt if the visit to the vet and the Prozac had anything to do with the change.
Rich G.ParticipantHi Victoria, I haven’t been on the site just to look around in some time and saw your post on lipomas. If you haven’t resolved the problem yet you should take a look at the “Paw Healer” website. They prescribe Traditional Chinese Herbal formulas for dogs & cats. One of there formulas is “Desolve” which is specifically for lipoma. My boy Indigo had some sort of a skin problem when he was born. Hard to explain but he just looked month eaten. At the same time he had anal gland issues that required them to be cleaned about every 3 weeks. After 4 vets & as many tests and medications nothing worked. I filled out the survey on the Paw Healer site and about 1 hour later they called me to get more details. We talked for about an hour and Holly said she would have to call her teacher. thirty minutes later she called back to tell me that it was likely Indigo had spleen and liver Qi deficiency and they could prepare a custom formula for him. It was worth a try and 3 weeks into the treatment his fur & anal problem improved. He been taking the herbs about 7 months, I’ve cut back on the dosage and he has been perfect for the last 9 months. They also sent probiotics that I started giving to another dog with skin issues and she is fine now. It’s worth a try. Good Luck.
