Spay day coming soon………
-
BonitaParticipant
With our beautiful- rescue weim Lola -who we lost almost a year ago- having so many complications from vaccination reactions, allergies ,hives that lasted weeks after her spay etc…we have been super careful with our pup Skyler.. By being part of the weimaraner addict site we have got loads of advice on when to spay etc..So we have waited until after her first heat & have booked her spay for April 15..We have a fantastic vet but I still feel nervous..Skyler is almost 15 mths & finished her first heat about a week ago .I am wondering now if this is a long enough time between when the heat stopped & her booked spay??It’s a good time for us- as we can be home..Gosh- I guess I am worried & don’t want our girl to go through what our poor Lola had to … Any thoughts??

BasGModeratorHi there, and welcome! First off, to put your mind at ease; even though Weims are a finicky breed, it is very uncommon for issues to arise due to, or after spaying. Any decent vet will know to be extra diligent with shots etc, and spread them out accordingly. Depending on body weight, size, etc etc etc.
I would say enough time has passed to have her spayed. But your vet will have eyes-on. Of course, every dog is different.
Let us know how it goes! My girl didn’t need any time at all to “get over” it. On the contrary. An hour after she woke up we were having problems keeping her from playing and ripping a stitch!

MyaModeratorThe weims at our vet have not had reactions to spays (as far as we know) but we regularly talk with them about shots. The vet tech there has a weim who reacts to shots and they know to spread them all out. Yes we did many trips to the vet for vaccinations, but no reactions at all!

elsie-piperParticipantOne of our weims just got spayed today, and had her stomach tacked. We had the same done to or 2 year old weim also. They older one had a great recovery with no complications. Elsie had the procedures done today, we will keep you informed of recovery. It is normal to be nervous, but everything will be ok.
KatieParticipantI too think you will have more complications keeping her quiet after her spay than with the actual surgery. Its normal to be worried, but know that you have done all you can leading up to it and that she is in good hands.
MyaModeratorOur veg called us to come pick her up early. I took the day off because I had predicted she would be crazy.
