Levi ate a whole bottle of sleeping pills once (although at the time we didn’t know what the meds were as he chewed off the label)…and when we went to the vet to have them induce vomiting, he also threw up a cat toy. Go figure.
I’m not sure I’d ever want to handle that on my own though. I think I would just take him to the vet to be sure. But then again, if he ate socks constantly…I’m sure that adds up! Still, an interesting read. I’d never heard of that before!
I kind of wish my parent’s cat (Snuggles) had his front claws. Levi used to mess with the parrot, but after a few good bites on the nose and one on the tongue (ouch!), he’s given up. But the cat can’t give such lessons. He had never met a cat before we moved home. I kind of can’t wait to move out because 90% of what he gets in trouble for is because of the cat.
I really think he was! I’m thankful everyday that he is with me. When we got him, I knew that eventually he would leave me. When Chris called me asking if I would take Levi, I called everyone I knew crying because I was so happy. I still send pictures to Chris now and then. And I fear the day Levi will retire, because I’m not sure anyone can ever take his place. But hopefully that’s far away!
Yeah, it’s always in our backyard! I’ll wonder why they haven’t come up yet, and I’ll go look. Both the boys will be huddled around something. And Levi is always so proud to give me his prize. He looks so offended when throw it away!
Levi and Diesel actually walk on separate sides anyway because I trained Levi on my right and Diesel is trained to walk on the left. We tried to just change it for walks but they would both slowly gravitate to their normal side.
And thanks everyone! It’s really cool to see people interested in what we’re doing. It’s great to compare notes with other weim owners too as I really haven’t met any before. Since Levi is my first Weimaraner it’s hard to know what is and isn’t normal behavior for the breed.
Levi has never actually chased anything while he was working. Ever. He knows better. He is very one track mind while his vest is on. It’s a very different version of him.
And he’s actually never gone after an animal while I was around. There have been situations where they have been around and maybe sparked his attention a little. But that was it. That’s why my mom doesn’t think it’s him since nobody has ever seen him attack kill anything.
EDIT: I think part of it might also be that Levi has a very different mindset than most dogs. He knows that I’m injured. He would never drag me. He was trained, yes, but I don’t always think that’s it. He’s not a robot and dogs get distracted. But he is very careful with me because he doesn’t want to hurt me. But with his previous owner, he would play very rough and pull on his leash because he could. It’s almost like when you see a dog play tug with a small child. They pull a little, but not enough to knock the kid down. That’s how Levi acts around me.
I knew Levi liked to chase things. He’s chased cats, squirrels, and rabbits. I’ve caught him a few times going after a squirrel and he did come back when called but wasn’t  happy about it. But that’s all I thought it was, just chasing. In California we lived in a duplex and the neighbor had bunnies. He would sneak under the porch all the time to play with their dog but never bothered the bunnies.
It worries me sometimes how he stalks the cat because I wonder if they were left alone would Levi actually hurt him. Right now if the cat is in the room, Levi is a few feet away watching him. We broke the chasing and nipping (finally!) but he’ll corner him and nudge him roughly with his nose until we intervene and break it up.
My backyard is a mud pit right now too because all the snow melted. I’m glad to see that what I feed him is average. My parents thought I was crazy because if they ever fed their dog that much he would be rolling around.
Levi gets Tricky Trainers (grain free!) He really likes the cheddar ones. I switched to them because they’re very small so I can treat with them often when training new tricks or tasks.
He also gets Natural Jerky Joy Sticks 36″ (although usually split one in half between the two dogs) ever now and then.
Levi goes nuts for any berries. Especially blueberries though. If I passed the “berry guy” at the Farmer’s Market, he would try to pull me back. Spoiled, much?
Levi eats Nature’s logic. 2 cups at 8am and 2 cups at 6pm. Along with treats throughout the day. He will be 2 in May. But he also is a service dog and goes with me everywhere (as well as doing weight bearing work) so it is a lot of exercise for him. With snacks, he actually eats way more than my parent’s lab. But then again Diesel is kenneled for most of the day. When Levi is more active than usual (swimming, going to the mall, running, amusement park, etc) I give him a little more.
I think I should also note that Levi gets 1 or 2 tablespoons of yogurt or pumpkin mixed in with his food (to help with his horrendous gas.)
I’m so sorry for your loss. Clark (my parent’s lab) passed away shortly after I moved back home. Diesel was in terrible shape. Not eating, sleeping a lot, etc. Honestly, I think Levi helped pulled Diesel out of it. I’m not sure how you feel about getting another dog after losing such a dear family member. But dogs often help other dogs. Even if you didn’t get another dog, but brought a friend’s dog around to play and be a companion that might help lift his spirits.
