We use Solvit harnesses – basically for two reasons…there is a third that would solve all of this, I’ll get to that. 😉
1. Chest – the harnesse covers the frontal stress point if there is an impact evenly and, from behind, with the connection point to the seat belt between the shoulder blades – seems like a pretty good way to deal with a dog possibly becoming a crash test dummy.
2. Solvit latches into the seat belt’s female receptacle. This is not perfect at all and kind of a pain for us b/c the shoulder blade to seat belt ‘leash’ is too short. Forrest & Denali are ~ 24 inches at the shoulder, the strap that connects them to the seat belt is ~20 inches. They can almost stand up….but are hunchbacks when they do. /shrug…that’s a dog problem, not a human one. 🙂 All they really want is to get into the front seat (where they are not allowed) anyway, so Solvit is doing it’s job in two ways #1, accident safety and #2, STOP BEING A WEIMARANER….YOU DON’T NEED TO BE SITTING EXACTLY ON TOP OF ME WHILE I DRIVE THE CAR! 🙂 (you’re stupid, yes i do…quoted from ‘any wimaraner’….)
As mentioned above, the third solution. Crate. It’s simple, it’s effective. Not for F, D & me, or for our situation, but crating in the car is the safest way to go. I’d look into a crate before a Solvit. The worst option is nothing.
