Yes and Yes. I’ve been working with her inside hooked to me on the leash, keeps her out of trouble while inside. She is starting to act a little more mature and has loved going to dog daycare when I am gone in the afternoons. The only problem now is that the daycare place is certain she is going into heat (looks the same to me as she always has) so she can’t go back for a few weeks. The breeder recommended waiting a heat cycle to spay her so it will be a while till she can play with other dogs.
I’ve also got her trained to trot along side my bike, which she loves, and we are getting outside more. Thanks everyone again for the advice and support!
We are in both a puppy socialization class and a canine life and skills class (not from petsmart). After reading the comments and a scare the other night (she had an allergic reaction to something, and I was so worried about her) I’ve changed my attitude and we are going to work it out. I’ve set up puppy playdates in my backyard for every other day with dogs from the neighborhood. We live in Utah and don’t know anyone else with a Weim besides the breeder and she lives 3 hours away. Everything you all said, I knew all along but forget and needed to be reminded.
Thank you for your empathy and suggestions. Thank you for this site! My husband and I have wanted a Weim for 8 years, we just got overwhelmed and needed a kick in the butt to remind us why we got her in the first place!
Thank you! That is just what I needed to hear. I only want to know that if I put up with it I really will have the dog you talk about. I have not had a Weimaraner before and just want to make sure that the behaviors are normal and that she will eventually come around. Thanks for your honesty 🙂
“Rough” was biting our hands and clothes constantly, and hard. She has done much better after playing with another dog for a week off and on. She was a dream puppy the night she came home and has been ever since at night, only whining quietly to go out then she runs back into her kennel herself. Right now we are having trouble with her biting clothing, though not as often, and she knocks my 1 year old over…deliberately. She will take off across the yard and knock her over as she runs by (its a huge yard, and it is totally on purpose).
Anyone have any tricks for getting her to stop counter surfing? (I know this is really common for Weims). She will get down if I tell her down, but how do you reward for not jumping up? Give her treats whenever she isn’t up? (the other 99% of the time)
We already had locks on all of our cabinets (thanks to our three and one year old). We love the magnetic ones, you can turn them on and off, you cannot see them from the outside, and you just touch a little “key” to the spot where the lock is to open them. You can buy them on amazon.
Thanks for the advice everyone! For those of you who have had puppies. What age (month) did you feel was the hardest? She is great now (11 weeks was a little rough we will admit), but I know we still have to get through the adolescent phase…
Thanks! Rogue is super smart and seems to learn any trick I ask in a few short training sessions. I will order the book since we are out of ideas for tricks (she can shake, go to her place, down, sit, kennel, get it, drop, leave it), thanks for the ideas and I’m sure I’ll have lots more questions. She is our first Weim and our first puppy, but we’ve wanted one for the last 8 years, just waiting for the right time to get her.
So I have a 13 week old Weim puppy, how is the best way to get her tired without causing damage? We do a lot of fetch, and go for walks, but some days this doesn’t seem like enough. Thanks!
